International Museum Day Celebrated to Promote Provincial Museum Services

International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated on 18 May globally. The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture honoured the day with a provincial celebration on 24 May, at the Port St Johns Wild Coast Museum.

This year’s International Museum Day follows the theme “Museums for Education and Research.” Officials from the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, alongside stakeholders from the Eastern Cape Department of Education, Wild Coast Museum, Nelson Mandela Museum and the Eastern Cape Provincial Heritage Resource Authority (ECPHRA) underscore the power of museums as dynamic educational institutions fostering learning, discovery and cultural understanding. in the various museums across the province had exhibitions on full display insight on their service offerings as well as educating on the rich provincial history.

Within the context of the Eastern Cape, the primary objective was to promote museum services to locals, visitors, learners, educators, researchers, tourism organisations, businesses, stakeholders and social partners.
