The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) hosted the Swimming National School Sport Championships that took place at Newton Park Pool, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape on the 19 – 21 April 2024.

Teams representing all the country’s nine provinces convened in Gqeberha in a 3-day championship marked by rigorous determination and fierce competition from the athletes. The Eastern Cape team performed exceptionally, boasting an impressive 2nd position overall.

The programme, which was managed by both the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Department of Basic Education, emanated from the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) entered by both Ministers endorsing that schools were the incubators for sport development and talent identification.

Key to the event was providing opportunities for learners to enhance their quality of life and achieve to the highest level of their ability. The programme aimed to increase school sport participation and un-earthing young sporting talent in schools within the country to foster social cohesion. The school sport program advocates for a unified, safe and developing sport towards an active and winning nation.
